Just warning so you don't get turned away from the series by the first game. I don't think Mother gameplay is bad, but 2 and 3 definitely improve it. Mother (the NES game) has a kinda dated gameplay, and it has a big explorable world. IMO only Legend of Mana tops Mother at quality in games storytelling and aesthetical experience. The level of emotional depth, quirkiness and fun it has without ever trying too hard is amazing. There's also a Mother 1 + 2 GBA rerelease that's the same games, but I'm not sure if they've been translated by fans. Mother and Mother 2 / Earthbound can be bought on 3DS / Wii U virtual consoles, if you don't want to emulate. Not only for a better understanding of the story, but I guess that somehow the theme and experience develop themselves from one game to the other. The stories are mostly unrelated, but for a better understanding I'd recommend playing them one after the other.
